The AG*IDEA Distance Option - Bioenergy and Sustainable Technology Graduate Certificate is offered through the Great Plains Interactive Distance Education Alliance (Great Plains Idea).
The Great Plains IDEA is a consortium of universities offering fully online graduate programs. Each university brings a unique strength to the multi-institution academic programs. In a multi-institution degree program, you apply, and are admitted at one university; enroll in all your courses at that university; and, graduate or receive a certificate from that university. However, your online courses are taught by the best faculty in the discipline from several universities.
The graduate certificate is offered by the following universities:
- University of Arkansas
- Kansas State University
- Oklahoma State University
- South Dakota State University
Career Opportunities for Graduates
The courses offer preparation for careers in bioenergy that concern issues of sustainability and energy resources, including:
- sustainability officer/coordinator
- project manager for sustainability projects
- chief sustainability officer
- renewable energy manager
- sustainability engineer
- sustainability analyst
The graduate certificate program is comprised of 15 hours of coursework ($515.00/credit) with a core course requirement of nine general credits to understand and appreciate the broad implications of a biobased economy and ability to communicate, interact and collaborate in this area. Students will then select two additional three credit courses to obtain a knowledge base in a specific discipline within a field of either feedstock, conversion, or sustainability.
For a list of courses being offered please see this link: Courses
Students will have completed a baccalaureate degree in agriculture, engineering, business, physical sciences, biological sciences, or social sciences. A minimum of 3.3 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) is required for entry into the graduate program. Courses taken for undergraduate credit cannot count for graduate credit.
To apply please select “Apply Now” at this link: http://www.k-state.edu/grad/ and select the appropriate category under the “Apply” section.
- Pay the $50.00 admission fee.

Biobased Products and Bioenergy Graduate Certificate
This Kansas State University Biobased Products and Bioenergy Graduate Certificate is offered through the K-State Graduate School , currently with collaboration of the departments of agronomy , biological and agricultural engineering , chemical engineering , and grain science and industry .
Chemical feedstocks, materials, and fuels derived from biomass have received increasing emphasis nationally and are seen as being very desirable from a number of standpoints. Private industry now actively recruits individuals with specific training in bioprocessing and biobased materials. With the interest in green chemistry and in sustainability, increasing along with the escalation of crude oil prices during 2008, emphasis on the utilization of biomass for energy and materials can only continue to increase.
This rapidly expanding industry has a growing need for a trained workforce. This Graduate Certificate Program is designed to identify students’ focus in their graduate training as well as provide post-baccalaureate educational opportunities for industry practitioners for whom a full graduate degree program is not appropriate at that point in their career. Students can develop a truly interdisciplinary background in a specific area, and yet the certificate will permit any given individual to tailor his or her program of study to specific interests.
